Setup for 2009/2010 growing season

Summer is short here in Canada. It is time to get ready for the next growing season. For 2009/2010, there will be four growing units:

  • a seedling ebb and flow unit;
  • a three pot HydroHomeSoft growing tray;
  • a homemade 6” PVC pipe aeroponics unit; and
  • two General Hydroponics Rainforest™ 66 units

Summary of 2008/2009 growing season

Well it is time to shut down the indoor garden and attend to the outdoor gardens here in Ottawa, Canada. This has been a busy and very productive year for HydroHomeSoft (HHS).

  • a new configuration for Phidgets provides a more economical starter solution
  • pH and EC management can be automated for each channel
  • EC can be progressively changed from growth stage to growth stage
  • Bruce Bugbee’s refill solution strategy was tested

Rainforest 66 Test Drive Results

This is a brief synopsis of the Rainforest 66 test run. Generally speaking, the units performed very well. In order to obtain a qualitative comparison, the same plants were grown in a DWC system with the same nutrient and lighting regime as the Rainforests. The plants, Tatsoi, Red Oak and Little Gem lettuce grew at a greatly accelerated rate in the Rainforests. I would conservatively say about 40-50% faster. No indications of nutrient deficiency or toxicity were noticed. The nutrients were not changed during the entire growing period, merely topped up.
